| Introduction Few topics have created the stir, controversy, confusion, and publicity in the twentieth century church as the topic of spiritual gifts. Of course, the noise continues with little effort at balance and clarity. Some Christians have over emphasized gifts to the exclusion of other aspects of our life and ministry together. Others, equally devout, deny the relevance of spiritual gifts for today. Everyone talks about gifts (or avoids talking about it), but there’s very little actual Bible study and discussion. What is a spiritual gift? Do I have one or some? What does the Bible actually say about it? What’s the truth that I need to know? These and similar questions are the main topics of this Bible study. To stay focused and productive, it is imperatively important that both the participant and discussion leader be aware of and actively pursue the following specific learning objectives: At the conclusion of this Bible study, the participant will be able to: 1. Biblically define spiritual gifts 2. Identify and explain several spiritual gifts listed in the Bible 3. Identify personal spiritual gifts 4. Remember and apply several key verses 5. Biblically explain a personal position on spiritual gifts. 6. Biblically apply spiritual gifts in personal ministry You will get maximum value from this opportunity if you keep theses specific learning objectives in mind as you progress through the Bible study. This Bible study material consists of three parts: 1. Spiritual gifts inventory. This is simply a tool to help participants identify their personal spiritual gift. This is important to focus attention and make the scriptures alive rather than theoretical. Inventories may be purchased at or taken free on line at http://www.kodachrome.org/spiritgift/ 2. Personal Growth Journal. This includes the suggested scripture readings, Tips on Bible study, suggested prayer, discussion items, and journaling items. Regular use of the journal improves your memory of what you’ve studied and application of it in your own life and ministry. 3. Discussion group leaders guide. This is in-depth background and process information for those using this Bible study in a small group/kinship/home church context. If you are a group leader, you can acquire the leader’s guide from your discipleship/small group pastor. We hope that you’re able to use this Bible study in a group setting. The discussion and fellowship found in group study are valuable for both understanding and spiritual growth. However, you can also use these materials for individual study. You can download the Personal Growth Journal from (insert link). Suggested responses to the discussion questions are regularly posted at http://www.hisfriends.org A Note on Preparation and Use of these Materials The Personal Growth Journal was prepared by Douglas Ison for use by RiverTree Church of Milford, OH and by the His Friends Christian Community on line. While the Journal is copywritten, you may use and duplicate it freely for your personal or congregational use. We do ask that you notify us of your use of the material so we can discuss results and your ideas for improvement and for future topics. If you are a discussion leader or if you are following the study individually of on line, please feel free to email Doug Ison at hisfriendsorg@yahoo.comPart 1--Introduction to Gifts of the Spirit Section 1. Overview Reading: 1 Corinthians 12:1-13 Key Verses: “Now to each one these manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good…All these are the work of the same Spirit, and he gives them to each one, just as he determines.” 1 Corinthians 12:7, 11. Note that in the Greek language in which the New Testament was originally written, the word “charisma” simply means “gift.” The emphasis in this language is not on the gift itself but on the generosity and undeserved favor of the giver. Any discussion of spiritual gifts must focus on God’s loving grace in blessing us. “It is clear that Paul anticipated a lively “charismatic” church, in which every area of Christian life and ministry was deeply shaped by experiential awareness of the Spirit… It is his vision of the church as a body continually open to the Spirit and regularly experiencing God’s intervention in varieties of gifts…All authentic Christian church life—life that mediates the presence and power of God in a variety of ways—is charismatic in its truest sense.” Max Turner “The gifts of the Spirit are not trophies, talents, traits, or toys. The gifts of the Spirit are God’s supernatural expressions of love, caring, kindness, healing, and concern—bestowed on us and through us.” John Wimber Suggested Prayer: Be completely silent for a few moments, focusing on the many gifts God has already given you. Pray that, through this study and these scriptures that the Lord helps you recognize: • Any sin of which you need to repent *Any promises of God that you may hold on to *Any examples of Christian life that you should follow *Any commandments to obey *Any stumbling blocks or obstacles to avoid. Including prayer regarding sins, promises, examples, commandments, and stumbling blocks is a good way to open your mind and heart the riches of God’s word. Discussion: 1. First Corinthians is a letter from the Apostle Paul to the church he founded at the Greek city of Corinth. Why is Paul writing to them about this? (Verse 1) 2. Why do some in the Church need instruction in the area of spiritual gifts? (v. 2-3) 3. What test should we apply to every spiritual motivation or action? (v. 3; also John 16:14-15) 4. What words does Paul repeat in verses 4-6? What point is he making? 5. In verse 7, who in the church receives God's gifts? Why should we remember this? Why are gifts of the spirit given to the church? 6. What specific gifts does Paul mention here? (v. 8-11) 7. Paul refers to the church as the "body of Christ". How are we included in the life of Jesus through the Spirit? (v. 12- 13) Spiritual Gifts Inventory: At this point, take the spiritual gifts inventory. This is a brief survey that will help you identify your personal spiritual gift and learn more about the various kinds of gifts. There is no right or wrong answer to the inventory. Just answer each item honestly. In a group setting, your discussion leader may give you an inventory. You can also take an inventory on line http://www. kodachrome.org/spiritgift/ You can also purchase spiritual gifts inventory material and relevant books, commentaries, etc at. Hisfriends.org Personal Growth Summary: What are some things you learned from the study so far? What is your main spiritual gift? Did this surprise you? Jot down a few ideas on how you personally can apply your spiritual gifts more fully in ministry both at church and in the community. Section 2: Propehcy Reading: 1 Corinthians 14 Key Verses: "But everyone who prophesies speaks to men for their strengthening, encouragement, and comfort…he who prophesies edifies the church." 1 Coriinthians 14:3-4 Prophetic ministry involves leading others by our lives before leading them by revelation. (1 Samuel 12:2-4) Maintaining a good character as we mature helps others trust us and enhances our gift. (1 Samuel 3:19; 4:1) Prophecy is available to all. Its not "fortune telling". Prophesy does often give insight into the current situation and its consequences. Scripturally, these are the purposes of prophetic ministry: *Edification--from the Greek "to build a house." Prophecy builds up people as the body of Christ. *Exhortation--which literally means "encouragement" but also includes correction or warning *Consolation and comfort for the people. ( 1 Corinthians 12:31; 14: 1,5,12, 24-25, 39) Suggested Prayer: Pray that God's Holy Spirit be present to teach you and your group or church and to give His gifts. Pray that God will help you understand the gift of prophecy and is proper use. Also pray that you enjoy the presence of the Holy Spirit and grow closer to God through your study. Pray that God make you aware of sins, promises, examples, commandments, and stumbling blocks. Discussion: 1. In your spiritual life have you ever been built up, encouraged, corrected, or comforted in your interaction with a brother or sister in Christ? Could this have involved the gift of prophecy? 2. What does Paul mean by prophecy (v 3, 30)? 3. What is the purpose of New Testament prophecy? (v3-4) "Prophecy is the human report of divine revelation…" Wayne Grudem 4. Why does the church need the gift of prophecy? (v. 23-26,29, 31) Note also John 4:1-42 5. What guidelines does Paul give for sharing prophecy? (v. 29-33) 6. How does God expect us to respond to prophetic words? (v. 29 and 1 Thessalonians 5:19-22) Personal Growth Summary: How is your understanding of prophecy different as a result of the study? What do you want to know about someone who shares a prophetic word with you? Take another look at the study's learning objectives; what progress have you made? Part 3 God Given Insight Wisdom and Knowledge Reading: 1 Corinthians 12:7-11; Acts 10 and 15 Note: The reading for this section is longer than for previous sections; you'll want to allow more time for it. This is the reading for the next section also. Key Verse: "to one there is given through the Spirit the message of wisdom, to another the message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit…to another distinguishing between spirits…" 1 Corinthians 8, 10 Suggested Prayer: Remain silent for a few moments waiting for the Lord to share his will with you. Pray that the Holy Spirit teach you about His gifts and that He give you and your church wisdom, knowledge, and discernment. Pray regarding sins, promises, examples, commandments, and stumbling blocks. Discussion: 1. Define the message of wisdom in your own words (v. 8) One Christian teacher has defined wisdom as: "The word of wisdom gives us God's direction--to lead a group, solve a problem, discern God's plan, or to please God with an ethical course of action. God shows us what He sees so we know what to do." Steve Robbins Note Solomon's insight in 1 Kings 3 in resolving the dispute of two prostitutes arguing over a baby. Wisdom is the recognition of God's principles and values, as opposed to human principles and values. 2. Have God ever shown you the solution to a problem you couldn't solve own your own? 3. Define the gift of knowledge in your own words (v. 8) Through the gift of knowledge, God instructs us and gives insight into a previous revelation, usually scripture. God helps us understand His word and acknowledge his will. Note Paul's understanding of the one-ness of God by comparing Deuteronomy 6:4 with 1 Corinthians 8:6 and 1 Corinthians 10: 19-20. 4. Re-read Acts 10: 9-29. How do these verses illustrate the gift of knowledge? Personal Growth Summary What's the difference between your personal human wisdom and the gift of wisdom? Note Mark 8:27-35. Part 4 God Given Insight Discernment Reading: 1 Corinthians 7-12; Acts 10 and 15; Philippians 1: 9-11. Key Verses: "And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in knowledge and all discernment, that you may approve the things that are excellent, that you be sincere and without offense till the day of Christ, being filled with the fruits of righteousness which are by Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God." Philippians 1: 9-11 "The discernment of spirits is the God-given capacity to recognize the source and significance of spiritual activity. Sources of spiritual activity can be divine (God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, angels), demonic, or human." Steve Robbins Suggested Prayer: Pray for the lost and the sick, especially those who may be under demonic influence. Pray that you and your church be blessed with greater spiritual discernment and be guided by God in application of this gift. Pray regarding your sins, God's promises, good examples for Christian life, God's commandments, and personal stumbling blocks. Discussion: Examples of the gift of discernment could include both: *Recognizing the presence and work of the Holy Spirit *Recognizing the presence and work of an evil spirit. Note the discernment Of Paul and others in Acts 16: 16-18. 1. in the passage Acts 10: 30-35, how are both the spiritual gift of discernment and knowledge illustrated? 2. What did Peter learn from the revelation in Acts 10? 3. At Acts 8:23, what did Peter discern? Personal Growth Journal Is it likely that another Christian you know may discern your sin? What should you do? What have you learned about wisdom, knowledge, and discernment that you didn't know before? Take a look at the study's learning objectives and asses you progress. 1. Biblically define spiritual gifts 2. Identify and explain several spiritual gifts listed in the Bible 3. Identify personal spiritual gifts 4. Remember and apply several key verses 5. Biblically explain a personal position on spiritual gifts. 6. Biblically apply spiritual gifts in personal ministry Part 5 Gifts of Service The Hands of God Reading: 1 Corinthians 12:27-30; Romans 12:4-6; 1 Peter 4:9-11; Matthew 25: 34-40 Key Verses: "…I tell you the truth, whatever you did for the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me." Matthew 25:40." "Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others." 1 Peter 4:10 Jesus, Paul, and Peter in their teaching and deeds did not emphasize only the more attention getting gifts of the Spirit. Rather, all three taught, demonstrated, and lived a self -sacrificing life of humble service. Suggested Prayer: Pray for the poor, AIDS victims, the homeless, the incarcerated, the mentally ill, and the entire outcast in your community. Pray for all children. Pray for your enemy and your enemy's children. Pray that you personally and your church be blessed with greater gifting to serve humbly. Pray regarding sins, promises, examples, commandments, and stumbling blocks. Discussion: 1. St. Francis of Assisi taught, "Preach the gospel everyday. If necessary, use words." How does this teaching relate to the gifts of the Spirit in our everyday lives? 2. Why do many Christians think some spiritual gifts are more important than others? Does this agree with Biblical teaching on spiritual gifts? 3. What spiritual gifts does Paul mention in 1 Corinthians 12:27-28 and in Ephesians 4:11-13? 4. In 1 Corinthians 12:29-30 and in Romans 12:4-8, what does Paul say about comparing and competing among believers? 5. What gift does Peter teach about at 1 Peter 4:9-11? What attitude should we have when exercising this gift? Personal Growth Journal Take a look back at the Key Verses for the studies you've completed so far. Which verse is the most memorable or important to you? Why? How are the gifts of hospitality, service, administration, kindness, and care, etc. being exercised in your church? In your personal life? What strengths and weaknesses do you see? How can you help? Part 6--Faith, Healing, and Miracles Reading: 1 Corinthians 12:7-11 Acts 8, 9, and 14 Note: The reading for this section is longer than average; you'll want to plan adequate time for it. Key Verse: "To another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, to another miraculous powers…" 1 Corinthians 12:9-10 "If you really want to experience the supernatural ministry of the Holy Spirit, perhaps the most important thing I can tell you is to put your confidence in Christ's forgiveness, not in you own godliness or traditions." Jack Deere "From the book of Genesis forward, God can be viewed as the One who acts in power in relationship to His people." John Wimber Suggested Prayer: Pray that the Holy Spirit teach you about His gifts and He give you and your church deeper faith and healing. During these studies, we've suggested that you pray regarding sins, promises, examples, commandments, and stumbling blocks. Perhaps you've done so at some level deep or shallow, or perhaps not at all. Whatever your circumstance, now is the time: *Pray repentance for sins as yet unrepented or sins that recur and hamper your relationship with Christ. *Pray to understand and grasp more fully God's promise of forgiveness for you through the blood of Jesus. *Pray that the Lord equip and strengthen you to follow the example of Christ; to walk with Him more closely, to keep company with Him more joyfully. *Pray that the Lord strengthen and enlighten you to obey His commandments, knowing that commandments are given from His enduring love for you. *Pray that the Lord remove or help you avoid stumbling blocks to your growth and maturing in relationship with Christ. Discussion: 1. How would you define the gifts of faith, healing, and miracles? 1 Corinthians 12:7-11 2. How is the gift of faith different than saving faith or the faith we live by everyday? 3. How is Saul's blindness healed in Acts 9:10k-19? 4. Why do you think God chooses to work through people much of the time? 5. Who has the gift of faith in Acts 14:8-10? 6. In Acts 9:36-42, when Tabitha died, what did her family do? How did Peter respond? How would you describe Peter's faith? Personal Growth Journal What's the most important thing you've learned so far in this study? What's your specific plan for applying what you've learned in your everyday life and ministry? Part 7--Tongues Reading: 1 Corinthians 14 "Tongues are primarily devotional language. They connect us with God intimately. With them, we praise God beyond what our own language can hold." Steve Robbins "I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you. But in the church I would rather speak five intelligible words to instruct other than ten thousand words in a tongue." 1 Corinthians 14:18-19 Key Verse: "Therefore my brothers, be eager to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues. But everything should be done in a fitting and orderly way." 1 Corinthians 14:40 Suggested Prayer: Pray that you and your church always minister through the gifts of the Spirit consistently with Biblical teaching to serve others and avoid any misunderstanding or abuse. Pray for the healing of someone you know who is ill or injured. Offer to pray with them in person. Discussion: 1. The items below summarize Paul's teaching on tongues. Fill in the blanks. *Tongues are directed to _____and not to ____. (v.2) *Tongues speak _______in the Spirit. (v. 2) *Speaking in tongues edifies the _______. (v. 4) *Paul prefers ________to tongues. (v. 5) *Tongues plus ________does edify the entire body. (v. 5) *When a person prays in tongues the mind is ________. (v. 14) *Tongues in public use need the complimentary gift of ________. (vv. 5, 13, 27- 28) 2. In verse 5, Paul says he would like everyone to speak in tongues, but he would rather we prophesy. Why? 3. Do you eagerly desire spiritual gifts? (v. 12) Personal Growth Journal Review these learning objectives and evaluate your achievement. |
